Basonas Construction Corp helps Honor United Nations Fallen Heroes

Basonas Construction Corp based out of Brooklyn, NY was touched to be chosen to construct the Memorial for the U.N. Fallen Heroes on the north lawn of the United Nations garden of the Secretariat Building of the New York Headquarters. It was created to commemorate the 22 U.N. Fallen heroes of the terrorist bombing of the United Nations Headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq on the 19th of August 2003.

Funded from the 1988 Nobel Peace Price award to U.N. peacekeeping forces, the Memorial has its centerpiece a wall of crystal glass with the words written by Brian Urquhart “Remember here those who gave their lives for peace” inscribed in the six official languages of the Organization. A bubbling fountain pool in the centre of the Memorial projects sound into the space reflecting the river of time, hope and life.

At the unveiling of the Memorial to the Fallen, Secretary-General Kofi Annan of the United Nations said “I’m sure we are all profoundly moved by the solemn beauty and dignity of this place of remembrance”.

The Memorial to the Fallen is composed of 191 stepping stones, reflective of the number of current members of the United Nations. The stone slabs were taken from quarries in five different continents. Fifteen of the slabs project vertically as solid blocks of onyx in varying heights. They are meant to serve as benches, since the Memorial is conceived as a place of remembrance and reflection. At night, the Memorial is lit from below like lanterns in the garden.

“The Memorial allows for a solemn and serine observation of the Fallen Heroes” says Michael Brion, vice president of Basonas Construction Corporation.

The Memorial to the Fallen was designed by the New York architectural firm Arquitectonica International.
